Design against bicycle theft

Bicycles

Bicycles can be some of the easiest vehicles for thieves and vandals to target. You can protect yourself from becoming a victim by following some simple steps.

  1. Get a good bike lock (D locks or combination locks are best. Look for 'Sold Secure Ltd' approved locks, or ask for a recommendation at a bike shop)
  2. Lock your bike to something secure, e.g. a bike rack or a lamppost. If there are no bike racks, contact your local council to ask if they can put some in. Always lock your bicycle, even if you are only leaving it for a couple of minutes
  3. Make the lock and bike difficult to manoeuvre when parked – keep the lock away from the ground and keep the gap between the bike and lock small.
  4. Lock up removable parts (e.g. wheels) and take light fittings with you
  5. Have your bike's frame security-marked or engraved
  6. Take out insurance, either by extending your home contents insurance or through a separate policy. Cycling organisations and bike shops may offer specialist cover.
  7. Record and register your bike - register your bicycle model, make and frame number. Contact your local police station for further advice
  8. Take a clear colour photograph of your bike and make a written record of its description, including any unique features
  9. Keep your bike in a secure garage or shed and keep the door locked
  10. Keep it out of public view
  11. Avoid isolated places – leave your bike where a potential thief can be seen

Did you know...?

More than half of all bicycle thefts take place from someone's property

My Opinion

I want to address some of the issue that has been said in the above bullet points and discuss with the public some of the advantages about it.

1st Burglars thieves and enemies will find ways to tackle locks regardless what category the locks are (just like a software, people will find ways to get an gimmick copy) but i will go and research more about locks at bike shops and ask other expertises.

2nd Again burglars will find ways to get the bike of the ramp lamppost and other solid structure component. The key thing is how long it will take for the burglars to carry out this procedure.

3rd Owner of the bicycle doesn’t have to be a genius to lock up their bike as detailed as they can. The question is how long would it take for a burglar to steal the bike?

4th Locking up components of the bike will be a time consuming this will put of the public from riding bicycle plus wheels spike are hollow and thin. The enemies will find a quick way to burgle bike parts.

5th It is pointless of people engraving there own bike because once the enemy has the owners bike there is many ways of burglars to differentiate the bike so the owner wouldn’t recognise it anymore.

6th I don’t see why bicycle user should take out any kind of insurance, unless they will get there cost of the bike or bike parts back. (Bike users will need to read insurance terms and condition as insurance companies has a lot of catch towards claiming policy. It is never straightforward and also they must read the small print).

7th I also don’t see why people should record or register there model of the bicycle to the authorities or the police station, If the statistic say the percentage of bicycle which have been retrieved to its owner are less then 5%. Bicycle is not a life threatening crime; the police authorities wouldn’t spend their whole entire case by looking for anomnus bicycle's.

8th It will be pointless if I took a clear colour photograph of my bicycle. If I were a burglar I would spray paint it, customise it, decorate it, sell it or hide it. How often are bicycle feature different to any other bicycle. (Probability 1 out of a 1000).

9th Not everyone has garages or shed plus not everyone live in a house a lot of bicycle users live in a flat or a council estate.

10th How can bicycle user keep their bikes out of public view? There are not many places that have an area to keep bicycles. We might as well not ride any bikes anymore.

11th It will still get stolen if their bike is left in a isolated place or a crowded area. It is unfortunate if the bicycle is left at that present at the wrong place and at the wrong time.

These are some of the points I have stated I am pretty sure there are many more solutions that public and burglars have answers too. The question is how many more solutions are there to steal a bike. I will need to go an investigate and interrogate people that have stolen bicycles and bicycles being stolen from them in the past.
